Looking to switch schools? What are the visa implications for international students?

When considering switching schools within the UK, there can be certain visa implications for international students depending on your immigration status and the type of visa you hold.
Here are some general guidelines, but please note that immigration regulations may change, so it is always best to consult with our colleges’ visa teams, official sources, an OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner) registered immigration Advisor or an Immigration lawyer for the most up-to-date information:
Student Visa:
If you currently hold a new Student (ST) Visa or the older Tier 4 General visa and wish to switch schools within the UK, you will generally need to apply for a new visa. This means going through the process of obtaining a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your new institution and applying for a new Student Visa from outside the UK.
It should also be noted that applicants currently on a Student Visa (or Tier 4 General visa) are subject to the rules on Academic Progression and the 2-year time-cap which limits their study below degree level. If you fall into this category, your immigration history will need to be checked to ensure you can apply for one of our colleges.
Child Student Visa:
If you hold a Child Student Visa (or Tier 4 Child visa), you will need to apply for a new visa if you want to switch schools within the UK.
Students applying for a new Student Visa or Child Student Visa to study at one of our colleges either outside the UK or within the UK will be supported throughout the process by the CAS & Visa Team at the Abbey DLD Group of Colleges.
Standard Visitor Visa:
If you currently hold a Standard Visitor Visa for study purposes, it is typically not possible to switch schools within the UK. Standard Visitor Visas are generally issued for courses of 6 months or less and do not allow switching between institutions. It should also be noted that a Standard Visitor Visa cannot be used to study part of a longer course such as a one-year course.
Note: EEA students may not need a visa to come to the UK if studying on a course that is up to 6 months.
Other visa categories:
If you are in the UK on a different type of visa, such as a work visa or a dependent visa, switching schools might have different implications. It is important to review the conditions of your specific visa category and consult with the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), an OISC registered immigration Advisor or an immigration lawyer for accurate guidance.
